The Saanen Dairy Goat is a highly productive milk goat breed originating from Switzerland. It is one of the largest and most widely distributed dairy goat breeds in the world.
Physical Characteristics
- Size: Males (bucks) stand about 90 cm (35 in) tall and weigh a minimum of 85 kg (190 lbs), while females (does) reach 80 cm (31 in) and weigh at least 60 kg (132 lbs).
- Color: They have white or light cream-colored coats, with some small pigmented areas tolerated.
- Distinct Features: They have erect ears, a straight or slightly concave profile, and may be horned or hornless.
Milk Production
- Yield: Saanen goats are highly productive, with an average milk yield of 838 kg per lactation (264 days).
- Butterfat Content: Their milk contains at least 3.2% fat and 2.7% protein, making it ideal for dairy products.
