The Royal Palm Turkey is a striking breed of domestic turkey known for its ornamental appearance rather than meat production. It was developed in the United States in the 1920s and officially recognized by the American Poultry Association in 1971.
Physical Characteristics
- Coloration: Predominantly white with metallic black bands on its feathers.
- Size: Males (toms) weigh 7.25–10 kg (16–22 lbs), while females (hens) weigh 4.5–5.5 kg (10–12 lbs).
- Distinct Features: A black saddle, white tail feathers edged with black, and red wattles.
Behavior & Uses
- Temperament: Toms are non-aggressive, and hens are excellent mothers.
- Foraging Ability: They are active, thrifty, and great at controlling pests.
- Primary Use: Mostly kept for exhibition and small farm production, rather than commercial meat farming.
