Description

The Reeves’s Pheasant (Syrmaticus reevesii) is a large and visually striking bird native to China. It was named after British naturalist John Reeves, who introduced the species to Europe in 1831.

Physical Characteristics

  • Males: They can grow up to 210 cm (83 inches) in length and weigh around 1,529 g (3.37 lb). Their most distinctive feature is their extremely long silvery-white tail, which is barred with chestnut brown and can reach 2.4 m (7.9 ft)—the longest natural tail feather of any bird species.
  • Females: They are much smaller, measuring 75 cm (30 inches) in length and weighing 949 g (2.09 lb). Their plumage is predominantly brown, with a blackish crown and a buff-colored face.

Habitat & Behavior

Reeves’s Pheasants are found in temperate evergreen and deciduous forests in central and eastern China. They have also been introduced to the United States, Czech Republic, France, and the United Kingdom for sport and ornamental purposes. These birds prefer wooded hills and are known to be high flyers when startled.
