Nigerian Dwarf Dairy

The Nigerian Dwarf Goat is a miniature dairy breed known for its high butterfat milk, small size, and friendly temperament. It originated from the West African Dwarf Goat and was refined in the United States for dairy production.

Physical Characteristics

• Size: Does stand up to 57 cm (22.5 in) at the withers, while bucks can reach 60 cm (24 in).
• Weight: Typically around 35 kg (75 lbs).
• Color: They come in a wide variety of colors, including black, brown, gold, and white, often with unique patterns.
• Distinct Features: They have upright ears, a straight or slightly dished face, and are the only dairy breed known to occasionally have blue eyes.

Milk Production

• Yield: Nigerian Dwarfs produce 729 kg (1,600 lbs) of milk per lactation on average.
• Butterfat Content: Their milk has an exceptionally high butterfat percentage (6.1%), making it ideal for cheese and dairy products.

Behavior & Uses

• Temperament: They are gentle, playful, and social, making them great for small farms and homesteads.
• Breeding: They are precocious, meaning they can breed at an early age, with high twinning and triplet rates.
• Primary Use: Primarily raised for milk production, but also kept as pets and show animals.
