Description

The King Quail (Synoicus chinensis), also known as the Blue-breasted Quail, Asian Blue Quail, or Chinese Painted Quail, is the smallest “true quail” species. It is native to southern China, South and Southeast Asia, and Oceania, extending south to southeastern Australia.

Appearance

Male King Quail come in various colors, including blue, brown, silver, maroon, dark brown, and nearly black. They have orange feet, which are adapted for a ground-dwelling lifestyle. Females resemble males but lack blue shades in their plumage.

Behavior & Habitat

These birds prefer grasslands, shrublands, wetlands, and cultivated areas. They are diurnal, meaning they are active during the day and even on moonlit nights. King Quail are often heard rather than seen, with males producing a descending whistle and a raspy “snoring” call.

Diet & Reproduction

King Quail are omnivorous, feeding on small insects, grass seeds, and vegetation. During the breeding season, males compete for mates, and females lay 5-13 eggs, which hatch after 16-18 days. The chicks are precocial, meaning they can feed themselves shortly after hatching.
