Description

The Green Peafowl (Pavo muticus), also known as the Indonesian Peafowl, is a large and striking bird native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia and Indochina. It is the national bird of Myanmar and is listed as endangered due to habitat loss and hunting.

Appearance

  • Males are 1.8–3 meters (5 ft 11 in – 9 ft 10 in) long, including their train.
  • Their upper-tail coverts are adorned with eye-spots, similar to the Indian Peafowl.
  • Both sexes have iridescent green neck feathers, resembling dragon scales.
  • Females are smaller and lack the extravagant train but still have beautiful green plumage.

Behavior & Habitat

  • Green Peafowl are capable of sustained flight, unlike their Indian counterparts.
  • They prefer dense forests, grasslands, and wetlands.
  • Males vocalize at dawn and dusk with a loud “ki-wao” call.

Diet & Reproduction

  • They are omnivorous, feeding on seeds, insects, and small vertebrates.
  • Females lay 3–6 eggs, which hatch after about 28 days.
  • Unlike Indian Peafowl, Green Peafowl are often monogamous
