Description

Coturnix is a genus of Old World quail that includes several species found across Africa, Eurasia, and Australia. These birds are known for their small size, rapid flight, and preference for dense vegetation such as grasslands and cereal fields. Unlike some related quail species, Coturnix quail do not perch in trees but instead spend much of their time foraging on the ground for seeds and invertebrates.

One well-known species is the Common Quail (Coturnix coturnix), which is widespread in Europe and North Africa. It is a small, ground-nesting game bird with streaked brown plumage, a white eyestripe, and, in males, a white chin. These birds are often heard rather than seen due to their distinctive calls.
