The Bobwhite Quail (Colinus virginianus), also known as the Northern Bobwhite, is a small, ground-dwelling bird native to North America, including Canada, the United States, Mexico, and Cuba. It is named after its distinctive whistling “bob-white” call.
Appearance
- Size: About 8-11 inches in length with a 15-inch wingspan.
- Color: Males have a black-and-white face, while females have a buff-colored face.
- Markings: Both sexes have mottled brown, black, and white feathers, providing excellent camouflage.
Behavior & Habitat
- Prefers grasslands, pine forests, brushlands, and farmlands.
- Lives in coveys (small groups) for protection and warmth.
- Engages in dust baths to maintain feather health.
Diet & Reproduction
- Omnivorous, feeding on seeds, vegetation, and insects.
- Can produce up to three clutches per year, with each clutch containing 12-16 eggs.
- Chicks are precocial, meaning they can feed themselves shortly after hatching.
