The Ring-necked Pheasant is a striking bird known for its vibrant plumage and distinctive markings. Males boast iridescent copper-and-gold feathers, a red face, and a crisp white collar, while females are more subdued in brown tones to blend into their surroundings. These birds are originally from Asia but have been introduced to many parts of the world, including North America, where they thrive in open fields and agricultural areas.
They are medium to large-sized birds, with males reaching lengths of 60–89 cm (24–35 in) and weighing between 0.5 to 3 kg (1.1 to 6.6 lb). Their long tails and powerful breast muscles allow them to make quick, vertical escapes when startled, reaching speeds of nearly 40 miles per hour.
Ring-necked Pheasants are social birds, often forming flocks, especially in winter when males and females gather separately. They are known for their loud, rooster-like crowing, which can be heard from up to a mile away. Their diet consists of seeds, grains, insects, and small invertebrates, making them well-adapted to farmland and grasslands.
